Am I too late to apply? |
Top ▲ |
As is the general rule of thumb for college, much of the paperwork required to go to college is time oriented with various deadlines. We encourage our students to be pro-active and take the initiative as college-going adults to make sure they are on top of this so as to alleviate any last minute emergencies. The deadline to apply for the Fall is October 1st and the deadline to apply for the Spring is March 1st (this means submitting ALL documentation to our office to be consider)

– Although our office tries to do everything to help our students, we do prefer to talk to the students about their files to preserve confidentiality. This also allows the student full awareness of their status and encourages ownership of their educations as college-going adults.

Can the Higher-Education Program pay for old student bills? |
Top ▲ |
No, it is the students’ responsibility to make sure bills from past semesters are taken care of in a timely manner.
 |
Does it matter what school I go to? |
Top ▲ |
Yes, it does. Students who seek assistance through our program must be enrolled at a two or four-year accredited institution and seeking an associates or bachelors degree. Although our program does not help out with technical schools there may be other programs in the Tribes that do.

Does the Tribe pay for books? |
Top ▲ |
In general, our program provides assistance in a lump sum amount and does not pay for each individual expense, i.e. books, tuition, fees, etc. It is the students’ responsibility to be prepared on the first day of class while they wait for educational awards from our office and other grants and scholarship programs they may be receiving elsewhere.

How do I start my application process? |
Top ▲ |
The very first thing a student should do is successfully submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. The submission of this information allows both the students’ financial aid office and our office to determine figures used to generate financial aid figures. This should be completed prior to starting the Higher-Ed Grant application process.

How long does it take for funds to be disbursed to my school? |
Top ▲ |
Once a student file is completed we ask that students allow two weeks for their assistance to leave our office. It is advised that students provide current contact information and keep up with their mail so that correspondence gets to the students to alert them of missing documents. Unfortunately, simple things like this have caused students in the past to receive their funding very late in the semester. Students should not assume that their file is complete unless they receive documentation saying so. Completeness is determined by the Program and not the students.
